Powderham Food Festival: A Feast for Food Lovers in Devon
Get ready, food enthusiasts! The stunning grounds of Powderham Castle are again set to host one of Devon’s most anticipated culinary events – the Powderham Food Festival. This two-day celebration of local food and drink brings together the finest producers, chefs, and food lovers from across the South West.
A Taste of What’s to Come
At a recent launch event, we were treated to a preview of the festival’s offerings, and it only confirmed why Powderham Castle is the perfect venue for this gastronomic celebration. The estate’s rich culinary heritage was evident as we toured the magnificent rooms with Heritage Manager Derry, who revealed the castle’s fascinating connection to creating and popularising the Devon Cream Tea. We even learned about peaches’ mysterious role in the castle’s history!
The estate’s farm-to-table ethos dates back generations—surplus produce was once sold to locals at the castle entrance. Today, this tradition continues through the excellent Powderham Farm Shop and Bistro, where we sampled delicious, chunky, and full-flavoured estate-reared venison sausages. Local producers showcased their wares, including Heron Valley’s refreshing Wild Nettle Fizz and various chutneys and preserves. The afternoon culminated in a grand Devon Cream Tea in the castle’s impressive dining room.
