Don’t Miss Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival: A Bookish Feast Just Down the Coast
By Stephanie Darkes
Just a short drive from Exeter, one of Devon’s most loved cultural celebrations is about to unfold. The Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival returns this week (17-21 September) with what promises to be an absolutely brilliant line-up that bookworms across the South West won’t want to miss.

A Who’s Who of Literary Talent
The festival features a diverse array of talent, from internationally bestselling novelists to prominent voices in journalism and history. Whether you enjoy captivating fiction, fascinating historical narratives, or thought-provoking political discussions, there is something here to ignite your imagination.

The festival organisers have plenty of local connections alongside the big names. Talks from the Earl of Devon, Taunton-based author Jennie Godfrey, Jane Corry, Patricia Crossley Hayes, Orlando Murrin, and Francesca Beauman from the excellent Persephone books ensure there’s a distinctly regional flavour to complement the national and international talent.
Perfect for Aspiring Writers
If you’ve always harboured dreams of putting pen to paper, the festival offers more than just inspiration. Local writers can hone their craft through Arvon workshops and a dedicated writers’ hub delivered by Word Kitchen – a fantastic opportunity to learn from the professionals and connect with fellow scribes.
Last-Chance Tickets
Here’s the thing about Budleigh Lit Fest – word has well and truly got out about its quality. Many author events have already sold out, and the remaining tickets are disappearing fast. If you’re hoping to catch Helen Lederer, Larry Lamb, Michael Sheridan, Tracy Borman, or Adele Parks in action, I’d strongly recommend booking today rather than tomorrow.

Perfect for Families Too
One of the things I love most about this festival is how brilliantly it caters to younger audiences. The weekend of 20-21 September is packed with free and low-cost family activities that promise to be both entertaining and enriching.
The family programme sounds absolutely delightful, with a focus on myths and legends that should capture young imaginations. From hands-on creative activities like “forging lightning bolts” and “planting with Demeter” at the Mini Marquee, to interactive storytelling sessions with Clive PiG on Sunday, there’s plenty to keep children engaged.
The Percy Jackson-themed treasure hunt around Budleigh Bay is a particularly clever touch – combining literature with adventure and local exploration. And for budding young writers, there are still a few places available on comic book and sea-themed writing workshops.

The Festival Atmosphere
What makes Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival special isn’t just the calibre of speakers – it’s the atmosphere. Events are spread across venues throughout this charming coastal town, creating that lovely, welcoming buzz that regular festival-goers rave about.
The famous Marquee on the Green returns as the festival’s beating heart, this year with catering by Pickle Shack (always important to keep the literary crowd well-fed!). The pop-up Waterstones bookshop ensures you can snap up that must-have title fresh from an author talk, while free musical entertainment each evening adds an extra layer of cultural richness.

Why Go?
As festival chair Sue Briggs puts it, “Budleigh Lit Fest is about celebrating the joy of stories in all their forms.”
With many events already sold out or close to capacity, my advice is simple: if you’re even slightly tempted, book now. Budleigh Literature Festival is one of those festivals that has grown in reputation precisely because it consistently delivers quality, and tickets for the remaining events won’t last long.
